Heritage Centre

The Antiquities and Monuments Office and the Institute of Archaeology of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences have been doing excavations on Ma Wan since 1997. They found human skeletons, ancient tombs, cooking utensils, pots and more from six different dynasties. The earliest discoveries were human skeletons from the late Neolithic period, which were named one of the top ten archaeological discoveries in China in 1997.

Most of the historical relics found have been given to the Antiquities and Monuments Office for preservation. The Heritage Centre, which was converted from the Fong Yuen Study Hall “Junior Fong Yuen”(小芳園) established in 1956, has a Tang Dynasty lime kiln and Qing Dynasty brick kiln found on Ma Wan, and replicas of the late Neolithic skeletons.
